What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are large, bulging, rope-like veins that are usually found on the back or lower legs. Varicose veins are often caused by flow disturbances within the leg veins. The one-way valves that assure blood returns smoothly to the heart can begin to fail over time (either as a result of age, hormones, heredity or other risk factors). When this occurs, pressure builds in these leg veins, and can cause pain, swelling and the bulging presence of varicose veins.
